Otero County
Otero County was created in 1899 and named for territorial governor Miguel Antonio Otero. Alamogordo became its county seat. During the period surrounding World War II, western lands came under United States Army control and became part of White Sands Missile Range. That military development contributed to the county’s twentieth-century transformation. Its history therefore connects a territorial-era jurisdiction with a later landscape of federal installations, protected natural areas, and communities along the Texas border.
Alamogordo is a useful starting point, but Otero County also includes portions of White Sands National Park and Lincoln National Forest. These represent markedly different landscapes within a large southern New Mexico county. Military lands are another important part of the map and should not be treated as ordinary recreation space. A focused itinerary identifies the particular park, forest area, or community involved before estimating travel and access arrangements.
